WHAT DOES THE SALVATION ARMY DO?

The Salvation Army is one of the world’s largest faith-based charities. Originally established in London, England in 1865, the Army has been helping people for more than 130 years in the United States.

The Salvation Army of the Coastal Bend provides many different programs and services that range from sheltering and feeding those experiencing homelessness, to rebuilding communities after natural disasters. We comfort the sick and elderly, support young people through after-school programs, and respond to needs in our community with practical help.

WHAT IS THE SALVATION ARMY’S MISSION?

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

How can I get help from the Salvation army?

If you need emergency shelter or meals of if you are experiencing homelessness and need help getting back to self-sufficiency, call our Social Services Center at – 521 Josephine Street – (361) 884-9497. Our programs help individuals to focus on their needs and successfully transition from homelessness into a home of their own. The Salvation Army’s emergency shelters can assist up to 20 families, 50 single men, and 10 veterans.

HOW CAN I DONATE MY FURNITURE TO THE SALVATION ARMY?

For more information on donating goods or to schedule a pick-up please call 361- 851-0723. Alternately, you can drop your donation off at The Salvation Army Family Store located at 5042 South Padre Island Drive.

While we often accept vehicles in running condition – due to differing regulations and other considerations, not all types of vehicles are accepted, so it’s best to contact us first.

IS THE SALVATION ARMY REALLY AN ARMY?

The Salvation Army is not a physical army in the military sense, but rather a global army of people moved to humanitarian action through faith.

DO YOU HAVE TO JOIN THE SALVATION ARMY CHURCH TO RECEIVE HELP?

No, we do not discriminate in any way.  We respect those who come to us in need, whatever their beliefs may be.

DOES THE SALVATION ARMY DISCRIMINATE IN ITS DELIVERY OF SERVICES AGAINST THOSE OF A PARTICULAR RACE OR SEXUAL ORIENTATION?

No. The Salvation Army strives to provide assistance to all who come to us for help. We make no distinction regarding ethnicity or sexual orientation.

You can volunteer! Our dedicated team of volunteers play a key role in The Salvation Army’s goal to provide support and the very best social services, to give aid wherever and whenever needed. Your time and commitment are essential to the success of our organization.

HOW MUCH MONEY GOES TO ADMINISTRATION?

Approximately 89 cents of every dollar we collect goes directly to programs, and 100% of every dollar donated for disaster relief goes to help the survivors and first responders.

HOW DO I DESIGNATE MY GIFT FOR A PARTICULAR PROGRAM OR COMMUNITY?

If you wish your gift to be used locally, you do not need to designate your donation. We will use your zip code to ensure that your donation will be properly allocated to the Salvation Army operation that serves your community. If giving online, a box is provided for you to designate your gift. If donating by check, designate the program of your choice in the memo line. If left undesignated, your gift will go to the area of most need. Alternately, you can mail a gift to our local office or call us at 361- 884-9497.

WHY SHOULD I HELP PEOPLE ON THE STREET WHEN THEY WON’T HELP THEMSELVES?

In these tough times, we all know of people who have suffered losses through no fault of their own. When such an event happens, The Salvation Army is there to help. The three most common reasons for homelessness are inability to pay rent/ mortgage, unemployment and divorce/separation. Giving to The Salvation Army is an investment in prevention. Through our programs, people are taught to behave responsibly and to assume control of their own lives.
