Our Programs

Sometimes Texans find themselves in need of help, many times due to situations beyond their control. It’s our mission is to reach out to individuals during the trying times and give a helping hand up. We offer many types of emergency assistance to our clients.

Food Pantries

In order to meet the ongoing daily demands for food and emergency assistance, our centers across Texas strive to keep well-stocked food pantries. Families and individuals, as well as senior citizens, are eligible to receive food boxes containing nutritious food items (canned food, dried goods, bread, frozen meats, etc.) to meet their needs for several days.

Rent/Utility Assistance

Studies show it is infinitely easier to keep a person or family in their home than it is to re-establish a residence for a person or family once they have become homeless. For those who find themselves in the middle of an unexpected crisis, Salvation Army assistance with rent and utility bill payments may be just the thing to prevent them from losing their home.

Clothing and Household Goods

For Texans in need of emergency clothing, household goods or furniture, vouchers may be offered by one of our social service caseworkers. The voucher can be used at one of our local thrift store or designated retail outlets to purchase the items they need.

Impacting Lives

Grief-stricken, Mark came to The Salvation Army Social Service office, sat down and began to cry. His monthly income was only enough to cover his rent and to pay for his wife’s expensive medication. Mark had had to make the decision to feed his family rather than paying his rent, car payment and other monthly bills. Mark’s social worker learned that he and his family had found a new apartment but did not have the funds to move in. She called the apartment owner and worked out a plan for them to move in that evening. She then helped Mark get an extension on his car payment, helped him find ways to cut car costs and encouraged him to get help with debt consolidation. The family was then given a box with enough food to last until Mark was paid again. A few days later Mark returned to us a new man. He seemed as if a huge burden had been lifted from him, and he had a much brighter outlook on his situation.
