Williamson County, Texas, Volunteers Take the Wheel for The Salvation Army

A group of highly motivated volunteers from Williamson County have stepped up to take responsibility for a Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Canteen (mobile kitchen). This is a unique situation and The Salvation Army is excited about this opportunity to better serve the community.

Randy O’Dell, a Realtor in Williamson County, located just north of Austin, has been appointed Volunteer Coordinator and has been the driving force behind this partnership. “I had been giving to The Salvation Army for many years and decided to get involved about a year ago. I wanted to expand my service outside of my own church and look at the bigger picture,” explains Randy. “I like that they are a Christian organization and have always admired all the good that is done by The Salvation Army.”

After several months of conversations and meetings with Salvation Army Officers in Killeen and Austin the idea of assigning a Salvation Army Disaster Canteen was suggested to Randy. “I met with the leaders of The Salvation Army in Austin to discuss how we could get a Salvation Army presence in Williamson County. I was thinking we could maybe open a Family Store or establish some kind of partnership with a local organization,” said Randy. “When they suggested the Disaster Canteen I loved the idea! This is just the kind of project I was looking for.”

The Salvation Army canteen is a full service “kitchen-on-wheels” that can prepare and serve approximately 1,500 meals per day. The canteen has been placed in Williamson County on school board property, along with school transportation vehicles, in which The Salvation Army will have access 24/7.

So far, Randy has recruited 45 volunteers who have committed to being part of the project which includes attending Salvation Army Disaster Training sessions. “We had 32 volunteers attend the first ‘Introduction to The Salvation Army’ session and have scheduled our next class, ‘Food Services’ training, for July. The volunteers are excited about the project and we received a lot of good feedback about the training,” said Randy.

Major John Carter, Area Commander for The Salvation Army in Austin, commented, “This is a great opportunity for The Salvation Army to expand our volunteer base for Disaster work and at the same time provide a Salvation Army presence in Williamson County. I believe this project may be the first of its kind; a Salvation Army Disaster Canteen being turned over to a group of volunteers outside of any local Salvation Army church affiliation. I am delighted about this partnership and thoroughly expect that the volunteers will be responsive, not only to the needs of the local communities, but will be deployable to other regions as well.”

Randy and The Salvation have an exciting vision for the future of this partnership. “I expect this will turn into much more than simply a kitchen-on-wheels,” concluded Randy. “I can imagine running lunch programs for the needy, breakfast for school children during the summer, and so much more. I believe this is a start to a great future for The Salvation Army in Williamson County.”

Albertson’s LLC Stores Raise Over $50,000 for Salvation Army Disaster Relief

Boise, ID (May 15, 2012) —Through the generosity of customers and associates, Albertson’s LLC is making a $56,000 donation to The Salvation Army’s disaster relief efforts in the South and Midwest, following the devastating series of spring tornadoes that impacted the area. The campaign, which began on April 4th and concluded on April 30, allowed customers to select a $1, $3 or $5 donation coupon while paying for their groceries.

“Our customers and associates are amazing, and their generosity during times of crisis is unparalleled,” said Wayne Denningham, president of the Southern Division for Albertson’s LLC. “While the immediate result of the tornado in early April was certainly cause to mobilize, the process of rebuilding takes time and help is still needed as survivors rebuild their lives. We’re grateful that we’re in a position to assist The Salvation Army with its disaster relief mission again this year.”

“The Salvation Army deeply appreciates the generosity of our friends at Albertson’s and their customers,” said Major C. Mark Brown, Community Relations and Development Secretary for The Salvation Army USA Southern Territory. “When disaster strikes, many people have told us how grateful they are to see our Salvation Army feeding units on the streets, handing out food and drinks to both rescue workers and survivors. But what they can’t see is the army behind the Army — our donors. It is through their generosity that The Salvation Army can help others in times of crisis.”

Albertsons stores from Arizona to Florida participated in the collection campaign via the company’s in-store Food for All program, and over the last year, customers and associates have contributed over $600,000 to help local organizations and disaster relief in the United States.

Fighting Food Insecurity

“Day in and day out, The Salvation Army works to fight food insecurity, hunger and poverty via thousands of food banks, pantries and shelters. Last year alone, we served almost 60 million meals to individuals and families in need. If the food served at Salvation Army locations isn’t purchased from the monetary donations of our supporters, it’s often donated directly from local businesses and grocery stores.”

FedEx, NASCAR Driver Denny Hamlin & The Salvation Army Welcome Family Home

Event aims to raise awareness of ongoing needs of disaster victims in Tuscaloosa and other parts of U.S. as they work to rebuild their lives.

TUSCALOOSA, AL (May 3, 2012) – FedEx Corp., The Salvation Army of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi, and NASCAR Driver Denny Hamlin are working together to bring awareness to the ongoing recovery efforts in the Tuscaloosa, Ala., area in the wake of the devastating tornadoes that hit the area in April 2011. Today, the two organizations and Hamlin are welcoming a local family into its newly built home at a special event in Tuscaloosa.

“FedEx is proud to be in Tuscaloosa and contribute to the ongoing disaster recovery efforts,” said Jannette Maye, senior manager, FedEx Station Operations in Tuscaloosa. “It is important to us to shed light on disaster victims’ continuing needs, which can persist for months and years following a natural disaster.”

Benjamin Torres, a father of three children, lost the home he was renting in the April 27, 2011 tornado. The Afghanistan and Iraq war veteran, who served in both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy, was out of the state when the storm hit. He frantically returned to Tuscaloosa to find his home destroyed, but joyfully found his children, who were staying with their mother, unharmed.

The Torres family is now receiving a new home built by The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), a not-for-profit humanitarian aid organization. The organization has a goal of building 20 homes in the Tuscaloosa area for victims of last spring’s tornado. The local Salvation Army chapter is providing furniture and appliances for the Torres’ home as well as for many of the other UMCOR-built homes in the area.

As part of the FedEx commitment to supporting disaster preparedness, relief and recovery efforts, the company is donating $10,000 to the local Salvation Army chapter in Tuscaloosa. A portion of this donation will be used to fund the purchase of appliances and furniture for the family.

FedEx has supported The Salvation Army for more than ten years. In 2007, FedEx began an initiative with The Salvation Army to provide funding for the purchase of Disaster Response Units (canteen trucks) in markets across the U.S. and around the world. To date, FedEx has provided funding for 14 Units, at a cost of approximately $100,000 each.

FedEx support enables The Salvation Army and its emergency response personnel to be among the first to reach the site of devastation and immediately begin providing material, physical and emotional comfort for both survivors and first responders. The company’s logistics expertise makes it uniquely qualified to help in quickly responding to a disaster and delivering supplies and aid to those in need.
