Salvation Army Begins Service Deployment Ahead of Hurricane Sandy Landfall

Alexandria, VA (October 29, 2012)—As Hurricane Sandy moves on-shore Monday and into Tuesday, The Salvation Army is already beginning feeding operations at shelters along the East Coast. Additionally, dozens of mobile feeding units, able to serve thousands of meals, are stocked and ready to deploy into the most heavily impacted areas once it is safe to do so in coordination with emergency management officials. Crews will provide food, hydration, clean-up kits as well as emotional and spiritual care.

“The Salvation Army is mobilized and ready to serve,” said Major George Hood, National Community Relations Secretary for The Salvation Army in the United States. “Our mobile feeding units and staff are strategically positioned and already beginning to serve at shelter locations throughout the East Coast.”

Specific Salvation Army activities include:

In New Jersey, The Salvation Army is serving meals, snacks and drinks at 11 shelters in five counties. A full fleet of emergency response vehicles is ready to deploy if needed. This includes 10 fully-stocked mobile feeding units (canteens), two service vehicles, and one mobile command unit. A canteen is embedded with Task Force 1, the State’s official search and rescue team, at Lakehurst Naval Base and may travel with them as they are deployed throughout the state.

In New York, The Salvation Army is coordinating with the local American Red Cross to provide volunteer support for shelters throughout Suffolk County. Eight canteens are equipped and ready to be deployed from the northern and western parts of the state.

In Philadelphia, PA, The Salvation Army is working closely with the Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management to ready three shelters within the city to help ensure those impacted by Hurricane Sandy will have access to essential services and safety.

In North Carolina, Salvation Army volunteers worked for 34 hours feeding residents at a shelter in Morehead City. The Salvation Army in New Bern also served evacuees at a local shelter. Eight volunteers and two officers prepared 120 meals.

In Virginia, The Salvation Army in Hampton Roads has been providing shelter since Saturday evening. A shelter in downtown Norfolk has served 350 meals and distributed 70 hygiene kits so far.

In Maryland, The Salvation Army of Salisbury served lunch to more than 200 persons at a shelter on Sunday. The Army is also in assisting with sheltering and feeding activities in Annapolis and other parts of the state.

The Salvation Army encourages all residents of areas in the storm’s path to stay informed of and heed all warnings and evacuation orders. Disaster response professionals recommend having a three-to-five day supply of food and water for each member of your family as well as flashlights, medication and battery powered radios.

The Salvation Army maintains a fleet of disaster vehicles and supply warehouses across the United States to enable speedy mobilization. There are more than 300 emergency response vehicles in the eastern and southern United States alone and nearly 600 units nationwide.

In addition to food, hydration, and emotional and spiritual care, The Salvation Army is also prepared to provide:

• Shower units
• First-aid supplies
• Communications support

The Salvation Army also provides a ministry of presence to residents looking for hope in the midst of turmoil. Pastoral care is available for all those impacted, but is not a prerequisite for receiving assistance. As Hurricane Sandy Advances, The Salvation Army Answers

Baltimore, MD (October 29, 2012) – The Maryland & West Virginia Division of The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (“EDS”) are now serving persons impacted by Hurricane Sandy as her outer bands lash Maryland’s eastern shore and those counties surrounding, and west of, Chesapeake Bay.

On Maryland’s eastern shore, The Salvation Army Corps in Cambridge sheltered 14 persons Sunday evening. The Salvation Army of Salisbury is serving meals at Salisbury Bennett High School, an emergency shelter for Wicomico County Department of Emergency Services. On Sunday, October 28, ten volunteers and two officers (36 volunteer hours) served 100 meals and provided 200 more servings of sandwiches and soup for additional persons arriving at the shelter.

In Annapolis, The Salvation Army served dinner to the storm refugees in the Annapolis High School Shelter. Forty meals, 120 snacks, and 96 bottles of water were provided. The Salvation Army will be serving lunch and dinner at the shelter until it closes.

The Salvation Army in Baltimore is in close contact with the Baltimore City & County Emergency Operations Centers. The Salvation Army also has representation around the clock at the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) headquartered in Baltimore.

All Salvation Army units across the Division are on stand-by status. Mobile feeding canteens are stocked, and Salvation Army officers and volunteers are ready to deploy as needed and requested by Emergency Management personnel.

The Salvation Army anticipates severe impact from Hurricane Sandy, and extensive need for Salvation Army services. The Governor of Maryland’s press briefings, Monday, October 29, indicate:

• There have been several rescues in Ocean City due to high water and flooding. There has been a break in the dune, allowing the ocean to wash up on Coastal Highway. The iconic fishing pier has been destroyed.

• The storm is increasing in intensity and may become a Category 2 before landfall. It will impact all of Maryland.

• This is a slow moving storm and will “give Maryland a beating over a period of 24 – 36 hours.”

• As of 2 PM power outages in Maryland number 24,000 statewide.

• Storm related fatalities are expected (from both surge and wind).

• Residents are asked to stay off the roads for the next 24 to 36 hours.

• The following bridges will probably be closed due to wind velocity: the Hatem Bridge, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the Tydings Bridge (which is the bridge on I-95 crossing the Susquehanna). No one remembers closing the Tydings Bridge before. Traffic on I-95 will be diverted to I-83.

• There are 23 state shelters open.

• The weather forecast is worse than 12 hours ago.

• Maryland will be hit with the most intense winds of the storm.

• Wind and tidal surge will cause flooding of streams, creeks and Chesapeake tributaries.

• Winds will shift and begin pushing water UP the Chesapeake (this is the really bad news).

• The US Coast Guard Captain of the Port will be setting Port Condition Zulu at 1400 EDT today. This means that all ports/waterways in the Baltimore Zone will be closed due to gale force winds. This includes the ports of Annapolis, Baltimore, Cambridge, Ches/Del West, Chesapeake Beach, Chestertown, Cove Point, Crisfield, Curtis Bay, Easton, Havre de Grace, Kent Island, Morgantown, Piney Point, Port Covington, Salisbury, Solomons, St. Michael’s Harbor, Washington, DC.

• There are/will be blizzard conditions in Garrett County (Western Maryland) at the same time there is tidal flooding on the Chesapeake, ocean surge in Ocean City and flooding of creeks and tributaries.

The Salvation Army Serves North Carolina Residents Affected by Hurricane Sandy

As Hurricane Sandy moved along the North Carolina coast, The Salvation Army in Morehead City fed area residents seeking shelter at the elementary school in Atlantic, NC this past weekend. Three trained volunteers and two of the organization’s officers served for 34 hours. They provided 83 meals to shelter guest and staff. The Salvation Army in New Bern also served evacuees at a local shelter. Eight volunteers and two officers prepared 120 meals. Officers are also trained to provide emotional and spiritual care to those affected.

As Hurricane Sandy moves to the Northeast region, The Salvation Army urges residents who may be affected to be fully prepared. Residents who plan on evacuating and going to a shelter should remember to bring prescription medicine, baby food and diapers, identification, credit cards and cash, pet supplies, toiletries and changes of clothing, blankets and pillows. Those planning on staying home should have multiple days of basic supplies including water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, radio and batteries, a first aid kit and ample medications.

The Salvation Army of Hampton Roads Begins Sandy Related Response

Hampton Roads, VA (October 29, 2012)—The Hampton Roads Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (“EDS”) in Virginia and Washington, DC has begun its work in response to the early effects of Hurricane Sandy.

The Salvation Army in Hampton Roads began response relief on Saturday evening providing shelter for 63 individuals. Since opening on Saturday evening, the shelter in downtown Norfolk has served 350 meals and distributed 70 hygiene kits. On Sunday evening, 71 people, 68 men and 3 women, found shelter at the Men’s Hope Center in Norfolk. The Salvation Army office will continue nonstop shelter services until the threat of harm from storm conditions clears and normal city and government services reopen.

Upon Sandy passing through the Hampton Roads region, The Salvation Army will work with local municipalities and other organizations to dispatch mobile feeding units, volunteers and resources to the accessible areas of greatest need.

The Salvation Army of Virginia and DC Preparing as Sandy Approaches

Hampton Roads, VA (October 28, 2012) –The Hampton Roads Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (“EDS”) across Virginia and Washington, D.C. continues to prepare as Hurricane Sandy approaches the Commonwealth and District.

All Salvation Army units across the Commonwealth and District are on stand-by status. Mobile feeding kitchens are stocked, and Salvation Army officers and volunteers are ready to deploy as needed and requested by Emergency Management personnel.

The Salvation Army has six mobile feeding units standing by across the Commonwealth to serve in all areas of Virginia and Washington, D.C. where the need may arise. Mobile kitchens are capable of serving 1,000 meals per day.

Across Virginia and Washington, D.C., Salvation Army teams are collaborating with emergency management officials to ensure preparedness.

All Salvation Army units across the Division are on stand-by status. Mobile feeding canteens are stocked, and Salvation Army officers and volunteers are ready to deploy as needed and requested by Emergency Management personnel.

On Maryland’s eastern shore, Salvation Army Corps in Cambridge and Salisbury are prepared for mobile feeding in neighborhoods and at emergency shelters. In Salisbury, a section of the community has been asked to evacuate. Salisbury Bennett High School is serving as a shelter. In response to a request from the Wicomico County Emergency Management, The Salvation Army of Salisbury, Maryland, is preparing to serve lunch for more than 200 persons at the shelter on Sunday, October 28.

In Annapolis, The Salvation Army will be serving meals at Annapolis High School, where an emergency shelter opens Saturday evening, October 27, and will continue to do so until that shelter closes.

The Salvation Army in Baltimore is in close contact with the Baltimore City & County Emergency Operations Centers. The Salvation Army has been asked to feed neighborhoods that lose power should the need arise. The Salvation Army may also be tasked with feeding at a local emergency shelter if it becomes necessary to establish such housing. Salvation Army teams are collaborating with emergency management officials to ensure preparedness.

The Salvation Army Men’s Hope Center Shelter in Norfolk (203 West 19th Street) is prepared and planning to open as necessary as the storm approaches. In coordination with the Office to End Homelessness, the Men’s Hope Center is prepared to host women and men in need of shelter.

The Salvation Army’s mobile kitchen (canteen) is prepping to assist southside Hampton Roads to assist with relief efforts. Mobile kitchens are capable of serving 1,000 meals per day.

In Virginia, Salvation Army teams are collaborating with emergency management officials to ensure preparedness.

The Salvation Army Portsmouth Corps on Airline Boulevard in Portsmouth, Virginia is preparing the facility to serve meals to the residents in need in Portsmouth should the need arise.

Salvation Army Assisting After Mass Shooting At Wisconsin Salon

Brookfield, Wisconsin (October 22, 2012) – The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services Team (EDS) was on site at a location near the mass shooting at the Azana Salon & Spa in Brookfield, providing hydration and spiritual support to first responders and family members of victims. Three were killed and four were injured in the shooting which occurred around 11:00 a.m. Sunday, October 21st.

45-year-old Radcliffe Haughton, the gunman in Sunday’s shooting at Azana Salon & Spa was found dead — reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Haughton’s body was found inside the Azana Salon & Spa building.

Witnesses described a terrifying scene on a beautiful crisp, fall day in southeastern Wisconsin.

“We see about 10 people run out of the building with their arms up, screaming. We saw some woman crawl out the front door, roll down the hill and police scooped her up and took off with her. Then we heard a loud scream. Then they picked up another woman,” one witness told FOX6 News.

Officials in SWAT gear swept buildings in and around Brookfield Square Mall, as officials believed for much of Sunday afternoon that the shooter was still on the loose.

“I have two kids — two children. They were concerned. They’ve never seen the SWAT Team in action,” a witness said.

Brookfield Square Mall, Froedtert Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin were placed on lockdown for a period of time Sunday afternoon as officials searched for the gunman.

“They were instructing people not to leave the mall — kind of locking people in from the entrances,” another witness told FOX6 News.

Gurmukh Singh, a member of the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin was at the scene Sunday assisting the Salvation Army. He became a volunteer because of the mass shooting at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek just 77 days ago that claimed the life of six worshipers before the gunman, Wade Michael Page turned the gun on himself.

“Just even driving up and seeing the magnitude of the law enforcement response and seeing the towers from the news vans just kind of sends chills down my spine,” Singh said.

Singh said he was there to offer comfort to those in need.

“Most of the time it was just putting a hand on the shoulder and just let them know everything’s gonna be okay,” Singh said.

Salvation Army volunteers planned to help out at the scene until the incident was resolved.

Man! I Should Have That! (or Five Things That Belong on Every Canteen)

Sometimes I find it hard to write anything new about disaster canteens.

It’s not that I don’t love canteens — far from it. In fact, I can’t imagine a Salvation Army disaster program without them. But, when it comes to writing about our trusty mobile kitchens, it’s hard to find a new angle – especially one that doesn’t begin (and end) with the same old axiom, “and if you do nothing else, be sure to maintain your canteen!”

But what if you are already doing that? What if your canteen starts easily, the generator has been recently serviced and purrs contentedly when running, you’ve checked your tires for dry rot, and you’ve already tested all the major appliances, including lighting the stove – well, what else is there to do? Can anything be done to make that canteen even better?

Well … after a unit is mechanically sound, it’s time for outfitting. And, as in maintenance, your canteen may already be stocked with the basics: pots, pans, utensils, cleaners, sanitizers and disposable supplies, like garbage bags, clamshell food containers and cups. But beyond the basics, there are some handy items which may not come immediately to mind … but should be on every canteen.

So without further ado, here’s five things that make me say, “Man! I should have that!”

1. Food Thermometers. The most important responsibility of any canteen crew is to make sure all food is served safe. That means keeping cold food cold and hot food hot. That’s why a food thermometer is the number one item on my list. A food thermometer is the only sure way to monitor the temperature of food, and every canteen worker ought to have their own bimetallic stemmed thermometer and know how to properly calibrate it. And while you’re at it, splurge and buy a thermocouple for your canteen too. Thermocouples are digital thermometers that can get accurate readings in about 2 – 4 seconds, making them easier to use and more accurately read.

2. Disposable Gloves. Most people know to wear disposable gloves when handling food, but what often gets overlooked is how often those gloves need to be changed. Any time you change tasks or begin working with a different type of food, it’s also time to wash your hands and change to a fresh pair of gloves – so every canteen should have boxes of gloves on board. Oh … and be sure to use food grade, latex-free gloves. Handling food with latex gloves can be very dangerous to people allergic to latex and cause a life-threatening reaction.

3. Assorted Serving Spoons. Here’s a rule: one spoon is never enough. You should have at least a half dozen serving spoons on your canteen and ideally, a separate spoon for each type of food. This will help prevent cross contamination, especially if you are serving from a buffet line made up of multiple Cambro® food containers. Utensils with different colored handles are particularly helpful; you can designate specific colors for specific tasks, like green handles for salads and red for meats.

4. MREs / Shelf-Stable Meals. Adding a case of MREs (or shelf-stable meals) may seem like an odd recommendation for a canteen, until you consider that many items on our disaster menu, like beef stew, contain a number of different ingredients. This makes it hard to advise people with food allergies and special dietary restrictions exactly what’s in each dish we serve – and a mistake could make someone uncomfortable or worse dangerously sick. Manage this risk by having shelf stable meals on your canteen. Ingredients are clearly listed on each package so, in a pinch, you can offer these meals to individuals with dietary restrictions. Heatermeals.com is one my favorite choices for this type of product; a case of 12 assorted meals costs only about $60 and can last up to 5 years!

5. Numerex GPS Tracker. Want to always know where your canteen is? If your unit has a properly installed and operating GPS tracker on it, your wish is fulfilled. Simply login to www.felixlive.com, key in a user name and password, and you’ll be able to see on a map (down to street level) the location of your canteen. Now, it’s probably not a good idea publish those passwords here, but trust us. On a major disaster, our GPS system helps disaster personnel keep track of the myriad of mobile disaster units deployed and their movements. If you want to know more or your canteen doesn’t have a working GPS unit installed, contact your divisional EDS director.
