Vision for Haiti

Port-au-prince, HAITI– The Salvation Army Haiti hopes to partner with Visual Compassion to bring glasses and jobs to vulnerable populations in Port-au-Prince and southern Haiti.

“The Salvation Army’s greatest asset is its infrastructure,” said Visual Compassion founder and CEO Joey Dollack. He hopes to tap into that infrastructure to deliver prescription eyeglasses to children and adults in communities the Army serves. Through a laboratory with trained technicians in Port-au-Prince and screening stations throughout the city and into southern Haiti, the partnership could create much-needed jobs both in the capital and rural areas as well as addressing a widespread need for affordable eye care.

At a cost of just $10 US per pair of glasses, this sustainable project, “would be a good ministry for The Salvation Army,” said Major Lamartiniere, Divisional Commander of TSA Haiti. Most glasses are currently imported from Miami, so the markup can be steep. Getting the raw materials in-country and training a local labor force to edge lenses and fill prescriptions while maintaining minimal overhead would not only create jobs and make eye care accessible to many who could not otherwise afford it, but also bolster the local economy.

Dollack was able to visit Salvation Army operations in Delmas 2 and Fond des Negres during a two-day visit to Haiti, and is excited at the possibility of partnering with the Army in Haiti. He has seen this program transform lives in the States and is excited to see it work in Haiti. “When you have an opportunity to serve those who have less than you, you are looking through the eyes of Christ,” said Dollack, even if it’s something as simple as giving an eye exam to someone in need of glasses.

Visual Compassion has an existing relationship with the The Salvation Army in Houston, Texas and works with people in its recovery ministries to provide jobs through vision centers. The Houston program creates an average of 10 jobs in a year and is self-sustaining. Dollack has been able to use components of this program to improve the quality of life for people in Africa, South America and Haiti on short term trips and now hopes to have a long-term impact. Partnering with The Salvation Army in Haiti will be Visual Compassion’s first opportunity to set up a lab outside of the United States.

The Salvation Army Serving Tornado Survivors in Alabama

Auburn, AL (November 16, 2011) – The Salvation Army will serve storm torn neighborhoods in Lee County, Ala. on Thursday. Staff and volunteers will deploy throughout the Auburn area to feed, hydrate and encourage residents cleaning up after Wednesday’s severe weather.

A mobile feeding unit and a pastoral care team will work throughout the day to ensure that residents of can focus on recovery, while The Salvation Army meets their physical and emotional needs.

“Auburn residents have been extremely supportive of The Salvation Army’s disaster relief efforts across Alabama the past six months. We (The Salvation Army) are resolved to reciprocate their generosity and meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of Lee County residents,” stated Captain Ronette Smith of The Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army Serving Storm Survivors in South Mississippi

Laurel, MS (November 16, 2011) – The Salvation Army of Laurel, MS has deployed a disaster response team and mobile feeding unit to the Shady grove area in Jones County, Mississippi. Throughout the night a strong thunderstorm began moving across much of the mid south spurning several tornadoes.

A Mobile feeding unit will be present today to provide physical, emotional, and spiritual care to residents.

Teams will work throughout the day to ensure that residents of can focus on recovery, while The Salvation Army meets their physical and emotional needs.

The Salvation Army will be providing care and compassion to Jones County residents affected by these storms. We eagerly desire to reach out to the hurting residents of south Mississippi as we near thanksgiving,” stated Lt. Patrick Connelly of The Salvation Army in Laurel. “A celebratory season does not mean that pain and suffering will subside, but we pray our presence will bring the hope of a brighter tomorrow.

The Salvation Army has placed 14 feeding units on alert as storms continue to move across Mississippi and Alabama.

Salvation Army Red Kettles to Accept Credit Card Payments Via Squares

120-Year Old Fundraiser to Adopt Square in San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas and New York

San Francisco, CA (November 16, 2011) – The Salvation Army announced today that it will accept credit-card donations via on-site smartphones equipped with Square credit card readers at its Red Kettles in select cities this Christmas. The readers, provided by the San Francisco based company Square, Inc., will make donating to The Salvation Army easier and faster than ever before. The devices will be used by Salvation Army bell ringers on smartphones donated by Sprint (NYSE:S) in select markets, including San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas and New York, to allow donors who don’t carry cash to give via credit card.

“This partnership brings together the history of the campaign in San Francisco and a great technology from Square that makes it easier than ever for people to donate,” said Major George Hood, National Community Relations and Development Secretary for The Salvation Army. “With so many Americans continuing to struggle amidst the economic downturn, giving back to your neighbors in need has never been more important.”

More than 800,000 Square card readers have been shipped to merchants across the United States who are now empowered to accept payments via credit card. The easy-to-use device plugs into the headphone jack of iPhone, iPad, or Android device, and allows for safe and secure payments through a free downloadable application.

Sprint is providing the smartphone devices to the Salvation Army as well as the wireless service that will power and mobilize the credit card application.

“We’re proud to be part of The Salvation Army’s longstanding holiday fundraising drive by enabling anyone to donate at a Red Kettle with a credit card,” said Jack Dorsey, Co-Founder and CEO of Square. “It is now easier than ever to give to The Salvation Army.”

The announcement was made today in San Francisco marking the 120th anniversary of the Army’s iconic Red Kettle Campaign, which began on the wharf in San Francisco in 1891. During its history, the iconic campaign has become a part of pop culture, being featured in movies, television shows, music and literature. The campaign uses a force of more than 25,000 bellringers to raise money from holiday shoppers throughout the country. Traditionally, those donations have been made in the form of pocket change and small denomination bills. In 2010, more than $142 million was donated to help people in need with toys, food, clothing and other basic life necessities.

The Salvation Army’s Eighth Annual San Francisco Holiday Luncheon, hosted at The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in San Francisco honored The San Francisco Giants Baseball Organization’s ongoing support of the Army and other Bay Area initiatives. Attendees had the opportunity to give using the Square reader. With over 400 members of the community in attendance, Salvation Army bell ringers took credit card donations in support of The Salvation Army’s 120th Red Kettle Campaign.

“The goal of the technology behind the Square reader is simple – make transactions easier, and this year, we plan to make donating to The Salvation Army as easy as possible for our donors,” said Major Hood.

On Thanksgiving Day in Arlington, TX, Salvation Army bell ringers will also be accepting credit cards via Square readers as part of the Red Kettle Kickoff campaign during the Dallas Cowboys game against the Miami Dolphins at Cowboys Stadium at 3:15PM CT. The Red Kettle Kickoff is the 15th year the Dallas Cowboys and The Salvation Army have teamed up to support Americans in need. During the partnership, The Salvation Army has raised more than $1.4 billion to help people during Christmas and throughout the year.

Walmart Launches “12 Days of Giving” Facebook Campaign

Company Commits$1.5 Million to U.S. Nonprofits Focused on Providing Basic Needs

BENTONVILLE, AR, Nov. 14, 2011 – Who said ‘write in ballots’ were only for politics? For the first time, Walmart is empowering Facebook users to write in – or nominate – local nonprofits that could receive part of $1.5 million in grants this holiday season. Through its “12 Days of Giving” campaign, the company will accept submissions via Facebook with an eye for local organizations that are providing basic need items, such as food, shelter, clothing and baby supplies.

“We know that millions of our Facebook fans make charitable donations, help spread the word about important causes or volunteer their time,” said Wanda Young, senior director of social media for Walmart US. “We’re excited to hear from them and continue our efforts to help communities during these tough economic times.”

Starting today and through Nov. 30, users can visit Walmart’s Facebook page to nominate a nonprofit for the “12 Days of Giving.” Here’s how it works:

• Visitors to the page nominate local organizations by submitting a 200-word description, including the nonprofit’s impact in their local community.
• Participants must also submit photos that illustrate how the nonprofit is helping families make ends meet.
• A gallery on the page will highlight all user submissions to showcase how local groups are helping others and spreading cheer.
• A panel from the Walmart Foundation will review submissions.
• Grant recipients will be announced on Facebook daily from Dec. 12 to Dec. 23.

“Giving back has always been part of Walmart’s holiday tradition – in fact, it’s our tradition year-round,” said Julie Gehrki, senior director at the Walmart Foundation. “With the ‘12 Days of Giving’ campaign and grants from our Foundation, our giving will go even further and help make the holidays happier for communities across the U.S.”
