Sheltering
_____________________________________________________________
Time-limited Residential Programs
Time-limited residence programs are offered
in most communities to help individuals or families
move from overnight or temporary shelter care
into stable housing. Those involved may need
this service for a number of reasons, including
family dislocation, disaster, de-institutionalization
or just a shortage of income.
Some of our program components that help individuals
or families get back on the road to self-sufficiency
are counseling, child care, food boxes, housing
and job hunting.
Residential Settings
Most residential services include meals, counseling
services, case management services, transportation
and recreational services.
The opportunity is provided to all residents
to take part in worship and other activities
at one of our Salvation Army corps or at a community
church of their choice.

Tired of living with less than honorable
roommates, Allen was desperate to begin
a new life. With nowhere to go, and knowing
that starting over meant moving out of his
living situation, he came to us with only
hope in his pocket. Merely looking for shelter
and a warm meal, Allen got much more. Seeking
employment, we gave him a job as a Christmas
bell ringer. At the end of the Christmas
season, he went to work doing whatever jobs
were in demand from washing windows to painting
homes. In his spare time, he volunteered
at our shelter doing everything from making
sure there were clean linens to encouraging
and counseling the individuals who came
through.
Allen proved himself to be a dependable,
hardworking, compassionate individual and
was made Shelter Monitor, ensuring that
all physical and emotional needs were met
on an individual basis for each transient.
Soon after, we hired him for our part-time
weekend monitor position.
Allen is now not only a paid part-time staff
member, but continues to volunteer as a
shelter monitor and a van driver, who every
morning takes people to their jobs. Allen
has touched many lives in our shelter program.
He is a living demonstration of the objective
of our shelter program. |
