Christmas Assistance
_______________________________________________________________

___________________________________________

The “miracle” of Christmas can be seen on the faces of thousands of families who come to us each holiday season. You can see the joy of a little boy holding his first toy truck or a little girl hugging the doll for whom she has silently prayed each night. You can see the smile of single mother who proudly serves a traditional Christmas dinner to her family. You can see the comfort of a senior as he sits under his new blanket. These are all examples of the miracles we are able to perform with your help.

Depending on the needs of your community, we offer programs such as Angel Tree, Adopt-a-Family, Forgotten Child and Stocking Shop. We might hold a community Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner or provide food boxes for families to have a traditional dinner in their home. All of these programs help match the Christmas wishes of children, seniors and families with donors who are able to help us fulfill them.

It is only with the help of our thousands of volunteers and donors that we are able to perform these miracles for families who might otherwise not be able to experience the joy of Christmas. Whether handing out toys to children, to distributing gifts to shut-ins in hospitals and nursing homes, to providing a complete Christmas dinner to shelter residents and walk-ins, volunteers are a critical component of Christmas Assistance programs.

If you would like to help during the Christmas season, please contact your local Salvation Army.

Janet became a single mother of three because her home life became too turbulent for her and her children to stay in. It was Christmas time but she knew she had to leave Dallas for El Paso. This meant Christmas would be spent in a U-Haul, but at least her young children would be safe.

Teary eyed about this enormous change in her life, she pulled into a local truck stop for gas and a quick diaper change. While in the bathroom changing her crying babies, her diaper bag was stolen. In that bag, her entire savings, and now she was penniless. With no one else to turn to, and now nothing to go home with, she called The Salvation Army.

We were able to give her food, clothes and a safe place for her family to spend Christmas. Her children had gifts to open, a bed to sleep in and a place to celebrate the holiday instead of a smelly U-Haul. Instead of fear, the family now had hope, instead of frowns, they had smiles.

Jane’s family emergency is one of many that we help throughout the Christmas season and year round. With the help of the community, we seek to provide safe shelter for anyone who needs it.
