The Salvation Army Honored Our Heroes Once Again On National Donut Day

The Salvation Honored Our Heroes Once Again On National Donut Day!

IMG_4009

Captian Sarah Gottlich, along with our Corps Cadets, continued The Salvation Army’s tradition of passing out donuts to our service heroes. In World War I, The Salvation Army Donut Lassies gathered materials and began frying donuts in frying pans and in soldiers’ helmets…and the infamous donuts were created. Thank you to all who have served our country and for “Doing The Most Good” for our country.

National Donut Day Friday June 3rd, 2016…Serving Our Heroes Again

National Donut Day…Serving Our Heroes Again

The Salvation Army Celebrating At The VA Hospital

& VA Nursing Homes

IMG_3449

Each year on the first Friday in June, National Donut Day honors Salvation Army Donut Lassies, dubbed Donut Girls or “Doughnut Dollies”, who made fresh, complementary donuts in the trenches for American soldiers serving in France during World War I. Two Lassies named Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance cleverly thought to fry the donuts, made from the limited ingredients available, in soldiers’ helmets. These are reported to have been an “instant hit”, and “soon many soldiers were visiting The Salvation Army huts”. Approximately 250 Salvation Army volunteers traveled overseas during WWI to set up these service “huts” located in abandoned buildings near the front lines. In addition to serving donuts, the Donut Girls also provided writing supplies and stamps, spiritual support, and offered a clothes-mending service to the soldiers in battle. Donuts became synonymous with Salvation Army and American WWI vets who were returning home with the nickname “Doughboys.”

The Salvation Army will serve our military veterans donuts, once again, this Friday, June 3rd, 2016 at the VA Hospital and Ussery-Roan Nursing Home.  The first location to deliver donuts will be the Community Living Center (VA Nursing Home off 9th) from 10:00am-11:00am.  Then, we will migrate from room to room to deliver donuts.  And finally, we will visit the Ussery-Roan Veteran’s Nursing Home on Tascosa Rd. from 11:00 am-11:30am.  A Donut Lassie will be our guest donut server as we talk and share donuts with some of the most important people in our community, our veterans.
