Phoenix, AZ (May 22, 2014) – The Salvation Army is planning to increase their disaster services as the Slide Fire has burned 4500 acres. Thousands of people are on stand- by to be potentially evacuated.

The Salvation Army is providing meals and clothing for evacuees located at Sinagua middle school located at 3950 E. Butler Ave. in Flagstaff, AZ. The Salvation Army has also provided water and Gatorade to fire crews.

“The Salvation Army has been told by community leaders that the fire could spread to densely populated areas,” said Lt. Ryan Miller, Flagstaff Corps Officer for The Salvation Army. “If needed, an additional Salvation Army disaster team is on alert that can provide added resources including a mobile kitchen.”

Salvation Army Concord Deployed

Salvation Army Concord Deployed Mobile Feeding Unit to Support Morgan Fire Relief Efforts

Contra Costa, California (September 9, 2013)—The Salvation Army Concord deployed its canteen (mobile feeding unit) to the Morgan Fire burning near Mount Diablo State Park in Contra Costa County. Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services personnel are there to serve meals, snacks and water to first responders and those impacted by the fire.

Last night, The Salvation Army served 375 dinners to the first responders on the fire lines and an additional 35 meals to local evacuees. Earlier this morning, the canteen moved to Camp Parks in Dublin to assist with the feeding of the incoming strike teams. At the request from fire incident command, The Salvation Army prepared and served 400 breakfast meals.

Denver, CO (August 19, 2013 6:00 PM)—Salvation Army emergency disaster response personnel have responded to a request from Jefferson County to support field operations in the Glencoe Valley Fire that erupted this afternoon near Golden, Colorado.

The Salvation Army’s Denver Metro disaster services team arrived on-scene at 8300 Glencoe Valley Road in Golden to provide hydration and nutrition items for sixty firefighters from a mobile feeding truck. Teams remain prepared to provide additional support as the situation develops.

This evening, Salvation Army teams continue their legacy of supporting the community during Colorado’s fire season. Over the course of this summer, The Salvation Army has provided disaster relief to first responders, law enforcement and evacuees of wildfires across Colorado. Today, The Salvation Army provides recovery assistance to those impacted by multiple Colorado fires including the devastating Black Forest Fire that burned more than 500 homes and small businesses.

Salvation Army Ramps Up Mountain Fire Relief

Idyllwild, CA (July 19, 2013)—The Salvation Army ramps up Mountain Fire relief as the rapidly growing Mountain Fire nears Idyllwild and Palm Springs, increasing both its on-the-ground efforts and its preparation for long-term assistance.

The Army has command posts in Hemet and Cathedral City so it can provide relief and support to evacuees and first responders at both the front and back end of the fire. Relief canteens (mobile feeding units) and trucks are handing out water and snacks at the turnaround points law enforcement has set up to keep people out of potentially dangerous areas. Mobile units are roaming to assist stranded motorists or any one else needing hydration.

Both the Hemet and Cathedral City Salvation Army Corps Community Centers have large kitchens where volunteers can prepare meals as needed. Dozens of volunteers including short wave radio operators are on notice that they may be needed at any time should the situation become worse and evacuations increase. Units from San Bernardino, Riverside, Moreno Valley and Murietta are on alert to join The Salvation Army in Hemet and Cathedral City.

The Salvation Army Family (thrift) store in Perris is preparing vouchers to help those who will need clothing as well as household items for long term assistance in rebuilding.

“Our hearts go out to all those affected by the wildfires, followed by our hands,” said Lt. Tony Poe of Hemet. “Our Salvation Army officers are ordained ministers who can provide emotional and spiritual support as well as those tangibles such as water, snacks, a good meal.”

“When we serve the adults and children, uncertainty and fear shows in their eyes despite their brave smiles. Along with hydration and food, spiritual comfort is our priority. We appreciate all of our community volunteers and those who give so generously to help these folks who clearly are hurting,” says Lt. Sean Kelsey of the Cathedral City Salvation Army in the Coachella Valley.

Massive Overnight Fire at Camp Keystone as Dining Hall Erupts in Flames

Massive overnight fire at Camp Keystone

The massive overnight fire at Camp Keystone (Florida Division) that destroyed the camp’s largest building—its dining hall—on Saturday did not prevent various summer camp programs from continuing.

The Florida Fire Marshal’s office, which is still trying to determine the cause of the blaze, says the three-alarm fire started in the laundry area of the building and caused an estimated $3 million in damage.

More than 300 campers and staff were sleeping when a Bradford County deputy discovered the fire about 2 a.m. Two-dozen fire crews from Bradford and Clay counties and the city of Starke assisted in fighting the massive overnight fire at Camp Keystone that destroyed the building.

Those campers in a cabin closest to the dining hall were evacuated. No one was injured in the fire. The dining hall, originally built in the mid 1970’s, has undergone renovations in the last few years, but is now a charred shell.

The annual Music Conservatory final concert went ahead as planned with a capacity audience from parents and friends around the division. One counsellor was reported to say to the media “They were singing & dancing in the tabernacle just like nothing ever happened.” On Saturday morning breakfast consisted of Pop Tarts and juice. The counsellor also stated “so the day is going on fine.” The Jacksonville Area Command canteen arrived and served through the weekend.

Later on Sunday, a 53 ft mobile feeding kitchen rolled into Camp from the Divisional Emergency Disaster Services base in Tampa. The kitchen, having seen service at hurricanes, floods and tornadoes, will now provide meals for campers and staff for the remainder of the camping season.

The Salvation Army Shifts Focus to Assistance in Yarnell for Fire Survivors

Phoenix, AZ (July 12, 2013)—The Salvation Army continues to provide assistance in Yarnell for Fire Survivors. Since the relief effort began, The Salvation Army has served more than 9,000 meals, 20,000 beverages, and 5,000 snacks. The majority of the meals were served to the incident personnel planning the memorial service and funerals of the 19 fallen firefighters. On the day of the memorial service, The Salvation Army was privileged to serve breakfast and lunch to more than 900 Honor Guard members.

“Many thanks to The Salvation Army for the meals they provided,” said Mark Hart, Information Officer, Arizona State Incident Management Team. “It kept us going as we were working 12-hour days. We also want to thank The Salvation Army for making signs to welcome back the fallen firefighters on Sunday. The signs were a focal point at the courthouse, and the community was able to write messages of support.”

The Salvation Army has been providing support and relief to the community of Yarnell in addition to the efforts in Prescott. The Salvation Army has been serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner in Yarnell since Monday. Assistance, which includes utility support, food boxes, gift cards for groceries, clean-up kits, fan boxes, miscellaneous other requests, and emotional and spiritual support, has been provided to more than 120 individuals and families. The Salvation Army actively seeks out those needs that are often overlooked. As a result, one five-year-old girl received a bicycle to replace the one she lost in the fire.

The Salvation Army Continues To Provide Aid To Yarnell Hill Fire Survivors

Phoenix, AZ (July 02, 2013)—The Salvation Army disaster team expands as the Yarnell Hill Fire grew past 8,400 acres and remains zero percent contained.

On Tuesday, July 2, The Salvation Army began providing breakfast, lunch, and dinner to first responders and survivors. Salvation Army canteens are en route from Henderson, NV, and Flagstaff AZ, to expand meal service. Currently meals are being provided at the shelter located at Yavapai College and for the staff at Yavapai County Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

To assist with the feedings, Fry’s Food Stores provided a large refrigeration truck. They also donated two pallets of water, one pallet of energy drinks, and one pallet of granola bars. Fry’s Family Stores has also promised to donate water for the duration of the disaster response.

The Salvation Army Disaster Services Provides Aid To Yarnell Hill Fire Survivors

Phoenix, AZ (July 01, 2013)—The Salvation Army has responded to a request for aid in the Yarnell Hill Fire that claimed the lives of 19 firefighters. The blaze grew past 8,300 acres as temperatures were expected to reach 100 degrees. The Salvation Army is providing various forms of recovery assistance to those affected by the fire. The Salvation Army in Prescott is doing social service intake for families affected by the fire to provide for immediate needs and offer spiritual support. In addition, The Salvation Army in Wickenburg is providing intake as Route 89 is closed and many evacuees cannot get to Prescott.

Beginning Tuesday, July 2, The Salvation Army canteens will begin providing breakfast, lunch, and dinner for up to 100 people. Recovery efforts are expected to be long-term and The Salvation Army plans to be present as long as there is a need.
